The Mark VI professional alto saxophone debuted in 1954, manufactured in France and went through numerous design changes until its phasing out in 1974. It was distinguished notably by a new design of the octave key spatula and the left- and right-hand plastic thumb rests. The modern saxophone keywork system is crafted after the Mark VI design. Key jazz musicians have performed on the Mark VI, such as Cannonball Adderley, Ornette Coleman, Phil Woods, and is a highly sought after horn for its flexibility, comfort and projection.

Based on the serial number, this horn was most likely manufactured around the year 1963, or earlier, as it does not have "Mark VI" engraved or stamped anywhere on the horn (a key feature of horns manufactured during the first eight years of the Mark VI) and has a floral and butterfly motif engraved on the bow and bell.
